GUEST LECTURE

The Advanced Criminal Law Studies Committee, School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), organized a Guest Lecture on “Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: Balancing Punishment, Reform and Victim Justice.”

The session was delivered by Mr. Ashit Mohan Prasad, IPS (Former DGP & Chief Information Commissioner) and aimed to provide valuable insights into the objectives and structural changes introduced under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. The lecture focused on the shift from a predominantly retributive model of criminal justice to a more reformative and victim-centric framework. It examined the reorganization of offences and punishments, the emphasis on proportional sentencing, rehabilitation of offenders, and strengthened mechanisms for victim justice. Students were encouraged to critically analyze how the new legislation seeks to balance deterrence, accountability, and restorative principles within India’s evolving criminal justice system.
